Auslan is the natural, visual language of the
Australian Deaf community. It is a sophisticated and
complex language and is recognised by the Australian
Government as a legitimate language other than
English (LOTE). Our “First Signs” program strongly
recommends the use of Auslan vocabulary in baby
signing for hearing children, as it offers a uniform
approach, rather than the use of ‘home signs’ or signs
from other countries (sign language is not universal).
It also provides a foundation for the continued learning
of a second language throughout life, which has many
developmental and social benefi ts for you and your
child, as well as for the Deaf community. We encourage
you to consider further developing competency in
Auslan and for more information on learning Auslan
please contact our office.
